The Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers (CAAAP) presents:

The Journey: Reflections On the First Twenty-Five Years

Opening reception: June 14, 2024
6:00 – 8:00 pm

Closing Reception – September 14th, 2024,
2pm-4pm

This exhibition is titled The Journey: Reflections on the First Twenty-Five Years. It is a sequel to the Journey: The Next Hundred Years. Twenty-five years ago, The Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers (CAAAP) launched a project to document the lives of African Americans at the turn of the century. Their first exhibition of this project displayed photographs encompassing all aspects of the daily life of the Chicago area African American communities, including the arts, new generation, religious life, and family, as well as social issues such as unemployment and homelessness.

Founded in March 1999, CAAAP was established by seven photographers to encourage photography featuring the African American community. The Journey is an ongoing documentary project of the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers.

The mission of the Chicago Alliance of African-American Photographers is to photographically document the culture and history of the African-American/African communities in both the Greater Chicago area and throughout the world.

Pshshshshshshs! Stories of Ukrainian Artist

Curated by: Sandra Leonard
Dates: August 9th – September 13, 2024
Opening Reception – Friday, August 9th

Valeria Tarasenko is a Ukrainian artist and teacher. She studied at the Polygraphic Department of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. In 2013, she graduated from the Ukrainian National Academy of Fine Arts, Painting Restoration department. Since 2008, she has worked as a teacher at the art school. Valeria is also co-founder of an organization that works with Down syndrome people — “Atelier Normalno”. Participated in many Ukrainian and international art projects.

Artistic Statement
I researched the topic of memory, which is mostly reflected in my works through the depiction of deserted places (projects “Bat in the Pool”, “Social Towns”, “Elastik” etc). I also have a collection of abandoned fountains, which includes more than 100 examples from different cities of the world. The theme of marginalization is also presented in my pedagogical practice in “Atelier Normalno”. I’m trying to integrate the creations of Down syndrome people into the contemporary art scene and show its creative potential it. My main expression tool is a large-size painting. After the full-scale invasion of Russia to Ukraine, I incorporated documentary footage to my drawings to fix my personal experience of war and share it with others. However, I also work with photos, installations, graphics, and printings and have an experience as an exhibition curator.
