Written as a response to McCarthyism (the censorship and blacklisting of American artists labeled “Communist” by Senator McCarthy and his followers), Arthur Miller’s 1953 drama brings the story of the Salem witch trials to life. By creating fictionalized versions of the real accusers and victims of the trials, Miller demonstrates the dangers of “witch hunting” and the political persecution of many to serve a few.
The name of the play alludes to two of the definitions of the world crucible: “A severe test,” “a situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause change.”
A brief synopsis: The town of Salem collapses in hysteria when a group of teenage girls, led by Abigail Williams, accuse their neighbors of witchcraft. When Abigail is spurned by her former employer (and lover) John Proctor, she targets both him and his wife. John is left with a choice: falsely confess and live, or be condemned to death.
