SUMMARY:Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien are Masters of Musical Mirth...and don’t we all need that right now…
DESCRIPTION:Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien are Masters of Musical Mirth…and don’t we all need that right now…\nSaturday\, October 15\, 2022 | 7:30PM\nTickets $40 \n\nBlues legend Corky Siegel is dubbed a “National treasure” by DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE\, and is known internationally as: “A master of piano and harmonica\, a superior entertainer\, singer\, and writer of unusual songs. Who else writes songs about Idaho Potatoes” – CHICAGO MAGAZINE  He celebrates 55 years of performance\,  is a Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inductee and Lifetime Achievement awardee\, with a catalogue of recordings on RCA\, Vanguard\, Alligator\, and million selling blues/classical recordings on the iconic Deutsche Grammophon label.  Randy Sabien is called “The past\, present and future of jazz violin” by NPR’s JAZZ PROFILES.  Randy Sabien is a regular at Big Top Chautauqua\, and has performed on A Prairie Home Companion and Austin City Limits.  His instrumental skill on the violin\, guitar\, mandolin\, and piano\, in the genres of jazz\, country\, and rock\, is legendary. \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nPLEASE NOTE: At the request of the artist\, the Beverly Arts Center will be implementing the following COVID 19 protocols for this performance: \n\nProof of vaccination or a negative test\, \nMasking in the theater and in all public areas\nSocial distancing\n\nA note from Corky: \nDear Cousins\,\nCousin Corky here. These concerts with Randy are outrageously fun and beautiful and I’m still requiring proof of vaccine and masks (both “reduce” viral load and work in all directions\, offering extra layers of protection).  People come to be uplifted and nurtured by the muse and take that home. I don’t want anyone to take Cyrus the Virus home and get sick from my music. LOL!  When it comes to creating a clean and safe environment “for each other\,” it’s really not such a big deal to wear a mask\, show proof of vaccine\, fasten a seat belt\, or drive carefully.  Thank you for your understanding\, and I look forward to seeing your smiling and laughing … … eyes.  🙂\nCousin Corky \nENJOY THIS VIDEO PREVIEW

SUMMARY:Second Fridays - Antonyms
DESCRIPTION:Antonyms\n\nOctober 14 – November 4\, 2022\nSculptures by Alfonso “Piloto” Nieves Ruiz \nPaintings by John Gutierrez\nMusic by Dave Barsotti\n\n\nSecond Friday Reception October 14\, 2022 | 6-8pm \n\nThe Beverly Art Center kicks off its fall Second Friday season with three incredible Chicago Artists. In the Main Gallery John Gutierrez and Piloto Ruiz could not be any different.   John’s paintings seem to hypnotize you with their graceful flowing layers of abstract color and line while Piloto’s sculptures grab you and shake you up. This exhibition is designed to play with this dynamic contradiction. Helping the viewer negotiate this harmony and chaos will be Dave Barsotti\, a sculptor and musician. He will create haunting soundscapes with instruments of his own invention.\n\n\nVisitors are encouraged to join the artists for a reception on October 14\, from 6-8 pm where they can meet new friends\, grab a cocktail and stroll the halls to see a wide variety of work by these and other local artists.\n\nReturn next month for Second Friday to see Responding to Rhythms\, a new juried exhibition by members of Chicago Sculpture International. For this exhibition sculptors were challenged with creating work on the theme Responding to Rhythms. Music will be provided by sculptor and musician Joe Rauen.\n\nDecember’s Second Friday will bring a magical immersive video art installation Fireflies in Winter by Edyta Stepien. The building will be filled with the sound of Lilianna Zofia Wośko on the cello accompanied by electronic beats. Her newly released music video and album will also be on display.

SUMMARY:Ashley January - Human | Mother | Black
DESCRIPTION:Ashley January – Human | Mother | Black\nExhibit in the Simmerling Gallery\nAugust 5\, 2022 – September 10\, 2022 \nArtists’ Reception – Friday\, August 5\, 2022 | 6-8PM \nStatement\nI address the Black maternal mortality and morbidity crisis in America through painting and multimedia. Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Influenced by my own traumatic pregnancy and survival\, the imagery centers the experiences of Black mothers and children who have suffered adverse birth outcomes but challenge the institutional modes in finding solutions. Motifs are structured around ideas dictated by necessary rituals of care. Environments articulate the imposed health effects disproportionately experienced. The images serve as a call to action for more awareness\, research\, and eradication of unnecessary maternal and infant death in the United States of America. \nBio\nAshley creates contemporary paintings informed by her maternal experience. Due to pregnancy complications that led to her son’s premature birth\, her new body of work addresses the crisis of the Black maternal mortality and morbidity rate in America. Recently\, Ashley became the first recipient of the Women’s Caucus for Art\, 2022 Emerging Artist Award. Additionally\, she was selected as a finalist for the 2022 Artadia Chicago Award. In October 2021\, Ashley was invited to show in a group exhibition for Black women’s wellness at the historical institution\, South Side Community Art Center in Chicago. In recent years\, her works have been exhibited in numerous venues including\, Mana Contemporary\, Chicago\, IL; SoLA Contemporary\, Los Angeles\, CA; the Museum of Science and Industry\, Chicago\, IL; Viridian Artists Inc\, New York\, NY; Laguna Art Museum\, Laguna Beach\, CA; Pacific Art Foundation\, Newport Beach\, CA; and the Irvine Fine Arts Center\, Irvine\, CA. Recently\, her paintings have been seen in the new television series\, Kings of Napa\, on OWN. In 2018\, she was selected as a first-place award winner at the Woman Made Gallery’s Midwest Open in Chicago. In 2017\, Ashley won the Beverly Bank Best of Show Award at the Beverly Arts Center’s juried competition. \n Ashley earned her MFA in Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design\, Laguna Beach\, CA in 2017 and her BS in Communication with an Advertising concentration and Minor in Studio Art from Bradley University\, Peoria\, IL in 2009. She lives in Chicago with her family while working from home and her studio at Mana Contemporary. \n

SUMMARY:Relics from "The Dream Machine"
DESCRIPTION:Relics from “The Dream Machine”\nSabbatical work by Nathan Peck\nIn the Simmerling Gallery | June 10\, 2022 – July 23\, 2022\nArtists’ Reception – June 10\, 2022 | 6-8PM \n  \nAfter twenty years at Saint Xavier University\, I finally took a semester off for professional development and creative production. My sabbatical was scheduled for spring 2021. I guess I was lucky that everything was closed. I am easily distracted and I really wanted to have time in the studio. The downside\, is that I generally prefer to make art with other people\, and all my other people just wanted to stay home too.  \nI spent over a thousand hours in the studio\, mostly alone\, except for my record collection and several dozen audio books and eventually Chicago’s White Sox.  \nA funny thing happens when I spend weeks and months alone like this\, as I did working the factory third shift in college\, or at artist retreats in Montana\, Germany or France.  I tend to work extremely long continuous spans repeating the same task and start to lose a little bit of control over the slippery space between my conscious and unconscious lives. The dreams become continuous simulations of my waking hours and my waking life becomes an attempt to replicate things I found in my dreams.  \nThe combination of muscle memory and the self-assurance of having only my opinion makes the action continue long after I fall asleep. My unconscious brain puts in another 8-hour shift complete with every detail. I can feel every splinter\, smell the paint\, taste the stale coffee and wince when it all falls apart again.  \nThe rewards for this laborious fourth shift are the visions. I get to see what my mind is capable of\, when it is not constrained by time\, budget or physics. I know what I can do awake\, but I am always surprised at the ludicrous concoctions of my unconscious brain. I always want to excavate some of those ideas and bring them back\, like relics from another time and place. For most of my life I have sketched out these dream relics with pencil on paper. This show is an attempt to actually fabricate and exhibit some of those dream relics to see what I can learn from them. \nThanks: Although I sometimes pretend that I am a solitary artist slaving away in isolation. I am actually\, as I said at the top\, far more interested in working with others. As people slowly started coming out of their pandemic zoom caves\, I had the opportunity to work with some of my favorite current and former students. This show would not have been possible were it not for four very important collaborators that came through at key junctures. Shay Lieske\, Emely Salgado-Huerta\, Bianca Santoyo and Anahi Valezquez each gave me hours of their precious time and skills. All of the photos and videos were made with their help. Many of the objects also have their fingerprints embedded.
