SUMMARY:46th Annual Art Comp
DESCRIPTION:46th Annual Art Comp\nOPENING\nAwards Reception Friday\, March 10\, 2023 | 6PM – 8PM\nIn Beverly Arts Center’s Simmerling Gallery \nNOTIFICATION\nArtists selected for ART COMP 46 will be notified no later than Thursday\, February 16 at 4PM. \nThe Beverly Arts Center proudly announces the open application period for ART COMP 46.  This annual juried gallery exhibition celebrates the talent and creativity to local and regional artists. Since 1976\, ART COMP has supported artists with prize money and the opportunity to show their work in the BAC’s Jack Simmerling Gallery.  \nHISTORY OF ART COMP\nIn 1976\, real estate developer Arthur Rubloff and local artists William and Judie Anderson\, all original supporters of the Beverly Arts Center\, decided to honor their good friends\, Alice and Arthur Baer\, by establishing  a juried art competition in their name. Each year\, the Beverly Arts Center awards over $5000 in prize monies to local and regional artists whose works are selected for exhibition. \nART COMP 46 is made possible through the generous support of Beverly Bank and Trust. \nAnnouncing our ART COMP 46 Jurors!\n\n\n  \nYoonshin Park is a Chicago based multimedia artist\, curator\, and educator working with sculptural papers\, artist books\, and installations. Her interest in the comprehensive process of papermaking and bookbinding caters her work to encompass various elements woven into complete objects. She often uses her experience as a foreign transplant to question space and its implications in defining one’s identity as the inspiration behind her work. \nPark has shown at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Bridgeport Art Center\, and Art on Armitage in Chicago. She has also exhibited at Flex Space at the Riverside Art Center\, Pablo Center and the AIR SPACE at Saint Kate Hotel in Wisconsin\, Simyo Gallery in Seoul\, Korea among other venues. Her curatorial projects were at Adds Donna\, Blink Contemporary\, and Woman Made Gallery. \nShe received her M.A. and M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago. Her work has been reviewed in the June issue of Sculpture Magazine in 2019. She currently teaches at Hyde Park Art Center and Evanston Art Center. \nPark was born in Seoul\, Korea\, and currently resides in Chicago\, IL  • Instagram: @yoonshin_park \n\nJennifer Mannebach is a Chicago based artist who is interested in the borders and edges of where things collect\, and how boundaries are created and represented. She exploits the potential of material relationships\, playing with translucency and dynamic shifts in scale\, with respect to malleability at the seams. Materials find a home with each other\, but always with a looming tectonic shift.\nShe received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, where she subsequently taught for 6 years. She is an adjunct professor at Concordia University\, an artist/researcher with CAPE\, and an advocate for many of her artist friends at Little City Foundation\, where she was an art facilitator for 15 years. SUMMARY:I Figured As Much
DESCRIPTION:I Figured As Much\nOpening January 13\, 2023 | 6-8pm\nExhibit runs through Feb 3 \nI Figured As Much is an exhibition of five figurative artists working in five different disciplines\, featuring works by Paul Branton\, Robin Power\, Todd English-Dumont\, Chantala Kommanivanh\, and Sulyiman Stokes. Curated by Paul Branton. \nMusical guest: Emmy award-winning musician and DJ\, Cam Be. \nSave the date!\nJoin us Saturday\, January 21\, 2023 from 2-4PM for a conversation with all the artists from l Figured As Much\, led by artist and curator Paul Branton. \n“We are not a monolithic people.  Our thoughts on humanity are mostly informed from the lens in which we view the world.  Every pocket of the city of Chicago has a unique perspective.  It is from these different vantage points that influence our thoughts\, and moreover\, our art.  So\, in thinking of the human body and how it’s represented through art\, there is a vast spectrum of figurative work based on our interpretation of not only the body\, but the human experience. \nIn this exhibit I want to explore these different vantage points through various mediums; mixed medium\, sculpture\, painting and photography.  It will give a glimpse of every perspective with both stark contrast and subtle commonalities.  Visually\, the exhibit will tell the story of community and subcultures\, revealing layers of worlds yet to be explored.  Sometimes these undiscovered worlds are a million miles away\, and often just a few blocks over.” – Artist and Curator\, Paul Branton \nSecond Fridays is a collaboration between Saint Xavier University\, the Beverly Area Arts Alliance and the Beverly Arts Center to bring exciting new art and music to the BAC’s Simmerling Gallery every Second Friday.

SUMMARY:Second Fridays - Responding To Rhythms
DESCRIPTION:Responding to Rhythms:\n2022 Chicago Sculpture International Juried Exhibition\nNovember 11 – December 2\, 2022 \nJuried Exhibition by Chicago Sculpture International\nMusic by Joe Rauen \nThe Beverly Art Center invited all current members of Chicago Sculpture International to submit work for a November Exhibition titled Responding to Rhythms. Members were encouraged to interpret the theme directly or indirectly. Work was be selected for exhibition at the Beverly Arts Center’s Simmerling Art Gallery by Professor Nathan Peck. \nResponding to Rhythms – Curator Prompts\nThe music that I choose to have in my studio has always impacted the things that I create. When I was in school the first one in the studio after dinner got to choose the music for the night. I learned quickly how significant the role of music was in my creative production. I make entirely different work with speed metal than with smooth jazz. \nIn Grad school I shared a studio with a stone carver. The consistent tap of his hammer and chisel created a background beat for the studio. As I was sanding my wooden sculpture I would often slide into a rhythm with that tapping. It was the rhythm of the room. \nRhythms are just repeated patterns in motion or sound. \nHow do rhythms drive your creativity?\nHow do these patterns express themselves in your forms?\nHow is your work responding to rhythms?\n– Nathan Peck \nAbout the Curator / Juror:\nProfessor Nathan Peck\, MFA\nNathan has taught sculpture and multimedia courses at Saint Xavier University for over 20 years. His works\, built from recycled materials and obsolete technology\, often explore the interplay of object and sound. \nChicago Sculpture International\nhttps://www.chicagosculpture.org \nMusic by Joe Rauen\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txo6FslMkCI\nhttps://college.berklee.edu/bt/news/joe-rauen \nParticipating Artists:\nBethany Cordero\nCarol Hammerman\nChris Wubbena\nDoug DeWitt\nGina Lee Robbins\nGwen Yen Chiu\nJohn Upchurch\nKara Johnson\nKatherine Nemanich\nLaurie LeBreton\nLisa Nelson Raabe\nLynn Basa\nNancy VanKanegan\nNicole Beck\nOlga Salimova\nPlamen Yordanov\nScott Mossman\nShelley Gilchrist\nThomas Plum\nTomas Co\nVictoria Fuller\nYvette Kaiser Smith

SUMMARY:Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien are Masters of Musical Mirth...and don’t we all need that right now…
DESCRIPTION:Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien are Masters of Musical Mirth…and don’t we all need that right now…\nSaturday\, October 15\, 2022 | 7:30PM\nTickets $40 \n\nBlues legend Corky Siegel is dubbed a “National treasure” by DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE\, and is known internationally as: “A master of piano and harmonica\, a superior entertainer\, singer\, and writer of unusual songs. Who else writes songs about Idaho Potatoes” – CHICAGO MAGAZINE  He celebrates 55 years of performance\,  is a Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inductee and Lifetime Achievement awardee\, with a catalogue of recordings on RCA\, Vanguard\, Alligator\, and million selling blues/classical recordings on the iconic Deutsche Grammophon label.  Randy Sabien is called “The past\, present and future of jazz violin” by NPR’s JAZZ PROFILES.  Randy Sabien is a regular at Big Top Chautauqua\, and has performed on A Prairie Home Companion and Austin City Limits.  His instrumental skill on the violin\, guitar\, mandolin\, and piano\, in the genres of jazz\, country\, and rock\, is legendary. \n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nPLEASE NOTE: At the request of the artist\, the Beverly Arts Center will be implementing the following COVID 19 protocols for this performance: \n\nProof of vaccination or a negative test\, \nMasking in the theater and in all public areas\nSocial distancing\n\nA note from Corky: \nDear Cousins\,\nCousin Corky here. These concerts with Randy are outrageously fun and beautiful and I’m still requiring proof of vaccine and masks (both “reduce” viral load and work in all directions\, offering extra layers of protection).  People come to be uplifted and nurtured by the muse and take that home. I don’t want anyone to take Cyrus the Virus home and get sick from my music. LOL!  When it comes to creating a clean and safe environment “for each other\,” it’s really not such a big deal to wear a mask\, show proof of vaccine\, fasten a seat belt\, or drive carefully.  Thank you for your understanding\, and I look forward to seeing your smiling and laughing … … eyes.  🙂\nCousin Corky \nENJOY THIS VIDEO PREVIEW

SUMMARY:Second Fridays - Antonyms
DESCRIPTION:Antonyms\n\nOctober 14 – November 4\, 2022\nSculptures by Alfonso “Piloto” Nieves Ruiz \nPaintings by John Gutierrez\nMusic by Dave Barsotti\n\n\nSecond Friday Reception October 14\, 2022 | 6-8pm \n\nThe Beverly Art Center kicks off its fall Second Friday season with three incredible Chicago Artists. In the Main Gallery John Gutierrez and Piloto Ruiz could not be any different.   John’s paintings seem to hypnotize you with their graceful flowing layers of abstract color and line while Piloto’s sculptures grab you and shake you up. This exhibition is designed to play with this dynamic contradiction. Helping the viewer negotiate this harmony and chaos will be Dave Barsotti\, a sculptor and musician. He will create haunting soundscapes with instruments of his own invention.\n\n\nVisitors are encouraged to join the artists for a reception on October 14\, from 6-8 pm where they can meet new friends\, grab a cocktail and stroll the halls to see a wide variety of work by these and other local artists.\n\nReturn next month for Second Friday to see Responding to Rhythms\, a new juried exhibition by members of Chicago Sculpture International. For this exhibition sculptors were challenged with creating work on the theme Responding to Rhythms. Music will be provided by sculptor and musician Joe Rauen.\n\nDecember’s Second Friday will bring a magical immersive video art installation Fireflies in Winter by Edyta Stepien. The building will be filled with the sound of Lilianna Zofia Wośko on the cello accompanied by electronic beats. Her newly released music video and album will also be on display.
