SUMMARY:The Soul Commitments
DESCRIPTION:The Soul Commitments: A Tribute to the film ‘The Commitments’ \nMarch 14th\, 2025  \n7:30pm \nNon-members – $32 \nMembers – $29 \nThe world is made of stories\, and those stories make us. Who better to tell a story than the Irish? \nOn the streets of working class Dublin\, 1991 energetic and smart Jimmy Rabbitte pursues his dream of being the manager of a band. But not just any band\, he put an ad in the Dublin Herald looking for musicians to be a part of “THE HARDEST WORKING BAND IN THE WORLD!” \n Musicians came knocking on his door\, but if their influences weren’t American soul icons like James Brown\, Aretha Franklin\, Otis Redding\, or Wilson Pickett\, the door was slammed in their faces. Jimmy believed music should be about the sort of people you come from. Speaking the language of the streets! About the struggle of urban decay and about love! But not mushy shite love songs.  \nAnd so from one man’s dream is born “The Saviors of Dublin Soul” and STOAG recreates the energy\, music and vibe of Alan Parker’s cult classic film\, The Commitments\, based on the book from Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown Trilogy.   \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:CSO Chamber Music: African American Composers of the 20th Century & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:CSO Chamber Music: African American Composers of the 20th Century & Beyond\nSunday\, February 23rd\, 2025\n2:00pm \nTickets Non-members $40\, Members $36\, SoFA Students – $20 \nChicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music will perform the works of three distinguished African American composers of the 20th century & beyond: Jessie Montgomery\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Florence Beatrice Price. \nCSO violinists Matous Michal and Danny Yehun\, violist Danny Lai\, and cellist Karen Basrak will perform Montgomery’s Strum for String Quartet\, Florence Beatrice Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor and Wynton Marsalis’ string quartet piece\, At The Octoroon Balls. \nJessie Montgomery has been described by the Chicago Tribune as “a voice as refreshing as it is\, inexplicably\, recognizable”. Her piece\, Strum\, salutes “American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement\,” offering a vibrant\, modern perspective to the program. \nWynton Marsalis\, renowned for his decades-long mastery of jazz compositions and performances\, will have work performed of his New Orleans inspired piece\, At the Octoroon Balls. This work\, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as an “extremely impressive debut” with music that has a “thrilling urgency and power\,” blends jazz and classical elements in Marsalis’ signature style. \nThe program also honors Florence Beatrice Price\, a composer who lived much of her life in the south side of Chicago\, with a performance of her String Quartet No. 2 in A minor\, completed in 1935 but only published in 2019\, and never performed during her lifetime. With “a theme whose evocative blue thirds directly bespeak Price’s African American heritage”\, it is a piece “of remarkable emotional breadth”. Price rose to prominence in 1933 with her Symphony No. 1\, which debuted with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Chicago Daily News praised the work as “faultless… worthy of a place in the regular symphonic repertoire\,” and marking the first time a major orchestra performed music by an African American woman. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to experience the works of these influential African American composers of the 20th Century & beyond\, and honor their enduring legacies. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Free Vision Screening (From Ages 6 Months to 6 Years)
DESCRIPTION:V.O.I.C.E.S\nSaving Kids Sight\nVision Screening \nThe Beverly Arts Center is hosting a free preschool vision screening sponsored by the Beverly Ridge Lions Club.  \nNovember 15th & 22nd\, 11am-2pm \nWHY is vision screening important?\nThe first few years of a child’s life are critical in the development of good vision. Children should have\ntheir vision checked for issues such as misaligned eyes\, and problems that need correction with\neyeglasses. These problems are not always evident by simply looking at a child. Young children often\ncompensate for vision problems so well that parents\, teachers\, and pediatricians are unaware of a\nproblem. Many common vision robbing conditions such as “lazy eye” can be effectively treated if\ndetected in a child’s formative years. \nSaving Kids Sight\, a VOICES community service program provides a simple\, noninvasive and cost- free vision screening test performed on young children. It requires no medication or preparation and is PAINLESS. It is as simple as taking a picture. It does require parental permission. \nSaving Kids Sight screens for the following: \nHyperopia – “Far-sightedness” is the difficulty seeing objects that are near. Untreated this can\ncontribute to “crossing of the eyes” but can be corrected with glasses. \nMyopia – “Near-sightedness” is when the eyes focus incorrectly\, making distant objects appear\nblurred. It can be treated with glasses. \nAstigmatism- A condition in which the cornea has an abnormal curve causing out-of-focus vision. \nAnisometropia – This condition can adversely affect the development of binocular vision in infants\nand children. The brain will often suppress the vision of the blurrier eye in a condition called Amblyopia or “lazy eye.” \nStrabismus – Eyes are not directed to an object simultaneously. Sometimes the eyes deviate outward\nand sometimes inward. \nThe screening is ideal for children 6 months-6 years old\, but can be performed on older children. Results are immediately available. \n**Parental Permission is required. \nForms will be available at the event or at the front desk of the Beverly Arts Center.
