With Santa’s permission\, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa\, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:CSO Chamber Music: African American Composers of the 20th Century & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:CSO Chamber Music: African American Composers of the 20th Century & Beyond\nSunday\, February 23rd\, 2025\n2:00pm \nTickets Non-members $40\, Members $36\, SoFA Students – $20 \nChicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music will perform the works of three distinguished African American composers of the 20th century & beyond: Jessie Montgomery\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Florence Beatrice Price. \nCSO violinists Matous Michal and Danny Yehun\, violist Danny Lai\, and cellist Karen Basrak will perform Montgomery’s Strum for String Quartet\, Florence Beatrice Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor and Wynton Marsalis’ string quartet piece\, At The Octoroon Balls. \nJessie Montgomery has been described by the Chicago Tribune as “a voice as refreshing as it is\, inexplicably\, recognizable”. Her piece\, Strum\, salutes “American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement\,” offering a vibrant\, modern perspective to the program. \nWynton Marsalis\, renowned for his decades-long mastery of jazz compositions and performances\, will have work performed of his New Orleans inspired piece\, At the Octoroon Balls. This work\, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as an “extremely impressive debut” with music that has a “thrilling urgency and power\,” blends jazz and classical elements in Marsalis’ signature style. \nThe program also honors Florence Beatrice Price\, a composer who lived much of her life in the south side of Chicago\, with a performance of her String Quartet No. 2 in A minor\, completed in 1935 but only published in 2019\, and never performed during her lifetime. With “a theme whose evocative blue thirds directly bespeak Price’s African American heritage”\, it is a piece “of remarkable emotional breadth”. Price rose to prominence in 1933 with her Symphony No. 1\, which debuted with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Chicago Daily News praised the work as “faultless… worthy of a place in the regular symphonic repertoire\,” and marking the first time a major orchestra performed music by an African American woman. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to experience the works of these influential African American composers of the 20th Century & beyond\, and honor their enduring legacies. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Simmerling Gallery Art Exhibit: History and Time - Chapter Three of The Dinosaur Opera
DESCRIPTION:History and Time\nNEW DATE: Friday\, March 7th \nChapter Three of The Dinosaur Opera\n\nTime creates us\, history defines us. SUMMARY:The Soul Commitments
DESCRIPTION:The Soul Commitments: A Tribute to the film ‘The Commitments’ \nMarch 14th\, 2025  \n7:30pm \nNon-members – $32 \nMembers – $29 \nThe world is made of stories\, and those stories make us. Who better to tell a story than the Irish? \nOn the streets of working class Dublin\, 1991 energetic and smart Jimmy Rabbitte pursues his dream of being the manager of a band. But not just any band\, he put an ad in the Dublin Herald looking for musicians to be a part of “THE HARDEST WORKING BAND IN THE WORLD!” \n Musicians came knocking on his door\, but if their influences weren’t American soul icons like James Brown\, Aretha Franklin\, Otis Redding\, or Wilson Pickett\, the door was slammed in their faces. Jimmy believed music should be about the sort of people you come from. Speaking the language of the streets! About the struggle of urban decay and about love! But not mushy shite love songs.  \nAnd so from one man’s dream is born “The Saviors of Dublin Soul” and STOAG recreates the energy\, music and vibe of Alan Parker’s cult classic film\, The Commitments\, based on the book from Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown Trilogy.   \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE

LEDES\, AFTER THE FILM\nNon-members: $10 \nMembers: $9 \nBuy Tickets Here \nSYNOPSIS\nVienna\, 1913\, Europe is on the brink of WWI. Two young men become friends: Hugo\, a\nmusician from a privileged family\, tries psychoanalysis with Sigmund Freud\, while Adolf\, a struggling artist obsessed with vegetarianism\, falls in love with German nationalism.\n\nV13 Trailer\n\n  \nDIRECTOR’S STATEMENT \nI wrote the screenplay for V13 based on a play by the renowned French psychoanalyst and writer Alain Didier-Weill. Researching and reflecting on the rise of extreme German nationalism in Vienna before WWI and how it gave rise to the ideology of Nazism after were lifelong pursuits of Didier-Weill. He was himself analyzed by Jacques Lacan\, the controversial French psychoanalyst who was one of the most important intellectual figures of the 20th century. \nThe roots of his interest\, no doubt\, go back to the experiences of his own Jewish family during the occupation of France but also to his conviction that it was important for all of humanity to examine the roots of the Nazi ideology—just as Freud had felt psychoanalysis was important for all of humanity. \nFilmed overtly in New York City\, V13 raises unsettling questions about the relation between this moment in the past and the rise of ethnonationalism in the present. — Richard C. When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school\, they teach her some of their dance moves\, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Overnight\, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star\, and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Tracy faces scrutiny and bullying from the network producer\, Velma\, and her popular\, but vicious\, daughter\, Amber. With the help of the teenage heartthrob Link\, host Corny Collins\, and Motormouth Maybelle\, Tracy overcomes the odds and succeeds in her mission to integrate “The Corny Collins Show”. Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today\, not only because of its wit and charm\, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. The bright\, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past the color of one’s skin and fight for every human being’s equal rights \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:RE-BOP! Obstructions and Disruptions
DESCRIPTION:RE-BOP! Obstructions and Disruptions\nCurators Todd Bartel and Paloma Trecka invited 60 artists from around the globe to create collages that embrace the unexpected through visual\, rhythmic\, emotional\, or conceptual disruptions. \nRe-Bop! is the third iteration of Bop!\, the celebrated collage exhibition series originally conceived by artist Tony Fitzpatrick\, that showcases the parallel ideas of flow in both music and collage—where intuition\, playful abandon\, and spur-of-the-moment change and happenstance are embraced with artistic fervor and verve. Re-Bop! looks at the notion of unexpected\, disrupted\, and obstructed collage-making. \nMusical guest: saxophonist\, improviser and composer\, Mai Sugimoto. Sugimoto draws inspiration from her upbringing in Japan and her roots in jazz to compose and perform from her unique multicultural experience. \nFriday\, July 11\, 2025\, 6-8pm at the Simmerling Gallery of the Beverly Art Center.
