SUMMARY:7Metrix Presents: I Heard the City Breathe
DESCRIPTION:7Metrix Presents: I Heard the City Breathe\nShort Film + Gallery Exhibition\nExhibit Reception: Saturday\, April 11th\, 2026\, 6pm-8pm \nRuns Friday\, April 6th – May 1st\, 2026.  \nProduced by Brian Sykes (7Metrix). Featuring new music\, video and photography created in collaboration with ISPro Academy high school students and ISPro Music Artists. \nI Heard the City Breathe is rooted in the Black experience. This immersive exhibit brings the story of Chicago to life with sound\, image and memory. \nMore than a premier\, it’s a homecoming: a dedication and homage to the Southside roots that helped shape Brian’s creative voice and ultimately sparked this work. \n  \nArtist Statement: \nMy name is Brian Sykes\, and I am writing to propose a presentation of my collaborative project\,\n“I Heard The City Breathe”\, at the Beverly Art Center on April 11. This work is a short film and\ngallery-style exhibition rooted in the Black experience of Chicago. Through visual art\, music\,\nand storytelling\, the project reflects the emotional\, cultural\, and historical realities of the city\nwhile honoring the voices of the communities that continue to shape it. Presenting this work at\nBeverly Art Center would be more than an exhibition opportunity for me—it would be a deeply\nmeaningful homecoming. \nAs a Saint Xavier University alumnus\, many of the seeds for this work were planted during my\ntime as a student. When I arrived at Saint Xavier\, I was still learning how to process the\nexperiences I carried as a young Black man from the South Side of Chicago. I was surrounded by\npain\, trauma\, beauty\, culture\, and contradiction\, but I had not yet fully learned how to translate\nthose realities into artistic language. My time at Saint Xavier helped me begin that process. It\nwas there that I was challenged to trust my voice\, embrace vulnerability\, and understand that my\nlived experience was worthy of artistic exploration. \nA number of mentors played a critical role in that transformation. Nathan Peck\, Monte Gerlach\,\nCathy Saunders\, and Jane Hileman helped guide me through the artistic and emotional process of\ncreating deeply personal work. Dr. Jan Bickel of the Music Department helped me reconnect\nwith my voice and confidence in music\, while Michael Grimm of Production Services\ncontributed to the broader environment that encouraged me to think across disciplines and\nexplore multiple forms of expression. Their investment in me was not only academic—it was\npersonal\, affirming\, and life-shaping. \nOut of that period came my 2014 series\, “Inner-City Madness”\, one of the earliest bodies of\nwork in which I fully confronted the effects of poverty\, trauma\, and inner-city violence on Black\nchildren and families in Chicago. That series was deeply connected to my own psychological\nexperiences and became the first true foundation of my artistic voice. It was later given its first\nsolo exhibition by Amy Roach at the Beverly Art Center\, making Beverly one of the first\ninstitutions to publicly affirm my work. That experience has stayed with me ever since.\nReturning now with I Heard The City Breathe would represent a full-circle moment—not only as\nan artist returning to a meaningful space\, but as someone bringing back a more developed\,\ncollaborative\, and community-rooted vision. \nSince then\, my work has grown across multiple disciplines\, including music\, education\,\nmentorship\, and creative entrepreneurship. I began to work for Marlon King of Insomniac\nStudios. Through my partnership with Marlon King\, I expanded my skills in music production\,\nproject management\, artist development\, and music business\, and together we co-founded ISPro\nAcademy. Through ISPro Academy\, we have created pathways for high school students\, young \nadults\, and emerging creatives to learn audio engineering\, music production\, and music business\,\nwhile connecting them to real-world opportunities and mentorship throughout Chicago. \n  \nThat work has led to partnerships with a range of respected institutions and organizations\,\nincluding the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Museum of Science and Industry\, Hyde Park Art\nCenter\, Chicago West Community Music Center\, Elastic Arts\, Navy Pier\, Walter Payton High\nSchool\, and the Center for Creative Entrepreneurship. Some of the projects I have been honored\nto take part in include creating 30 minutes of original music for an 11-piece string ensemble for\nthe Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Soundpost Renaissance Remix Fashion Show\, leading\nworkshops through the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity Career Showcase and\nScience Works Audio Engineering Workshop\, and helping support professional development\nprogramming such as the Center for Creative Entrepreneurship’s Music Bloom series and\nmusic-industry meetups focused on publishing\, branding\, networking\, and artist growth.\nAll of those experiences have come together in I Heard The City Breathe. Supported by the\nDCASE Individual Artist Grant and the Illinois Arts Council Creative Catalyst Grant\, the project\nbrings together youth\, adult artists\, and community collaborators in an intergenerational\nreflection on the Black experience of Chicago. It is both a personal artistic statement and a\ncollective offering—one that honors memory\, struggle\, beauty\, survival\, and creative legacy. \nPresenting “I Heard The City Breathe” at the Beverly Art Center on April 11 would allow me to\nreturn to the place that first gave my work a public home and share how that journey has\nevolved. It would honor the mentors and institutions that helped shape me\, while also offering a\nnew generation of artists and audiences a chance to experience a work grounded in truth\,\ncollaboration\, and the spirit of Chicago. It would be an honor to bring this project to Beverly Art\nCenter and continue the story in a space that has already meant so much to my artistic life. \nSincerely\, \nBrian Sykes

SUMMARY:All These Words Are - POSTPONED: SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 7th\, 2pm-5pm
DESCRIPTION:Nat Soti \nAll These Words Are \nBeverly Arts Center \nJanuary 23rd – February 22nd \nNEW OPENING DATE: SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 7th\, 2pm-5pm \nAll These Words Are is an exhibition by Nat Soti that explores visual language and world-building at the intersection of art and graphic design. Drawing from an evolving dictionary of personal graphic symbols without pre-defined or fixed meanings\, Soti examines how meaning and expression emerge through use\, composition\, and context. As symbols appear and reappear across digital prints\, mixed-media works\, painting\, drawing\, collage\, video\, and motion graphics\, meaning is allowed to emerge rather than be dictated. \nIn a time where our culture constantly demands talking points\, hot takes\, and personal declarations\, All These Words Are reflects a state of “work-in-progress being.” The exhibition invites you to pause before certainty and embrace curiosity\, reflection\, and the ongoing process of finding connection and meaning for yourselves.

SUMMARY:RE-BOP! Obstructions and Disruptions
DESCRIPTION:RE-BOP! Obstructions and Disruptions\nCurators Todd Bartel and Paloma Trecka invited 60 artists from around the globe to create collages that embrace the unexpected through visual\, rhythmic\, emotional\, or conceptual disruptions. \nRe-Bop! is the third iteration of Bop!\, the celebrated collage exhibition series originally conceived by artist Tony Fitzpatrick\, that showcases the parallel ideas of flow in both music and collage—where intuition\, playful abandon\, and spur-of-the-moment change and happenstance are embraced with artistic fervor and verve. Re-Bop! looks at the notion of unexpected\, disrupted\, and obstructed collage-making. \nMusical guest: saxophonist\, improviser and composer\, Mai Sugimoto. Sugimoto draws inspiration from her upbringing in Japan and her roots in jazz to compose and perform from her unique multicultural experience. \nFriday\, July 11\, 2025\, 6-8pm at the Simmerling Gallery of the Beverly Art Center.

SUMMARY:dATAPLOT: Shared Hallucinations
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception January 12 Postponed Due to Weather\nJanuary 12–February 2\, 2024 \n  \n“Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space\, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be.”\n—Walter Benjamin\, Illuminations \n“Did Briet mean that just as “art” is made art by “framing” (i.e. treating) it as art\, so an object becomes a “document” when it is treated as a document\, i.e. as a physical or symbolic sign\, preserved or recorded\, intended to represent\, to reconstruct\, or to demonstrate a physical or conceptual phenomenon?”\n—Michael K. Buckland\, “What Is a ‘Document’?” Journal of the American Society of Information Science \nThe 2003 dATAPLOT exhibit at St. Xavier University Gallery was an early investigation into a possible future consumed by AI writing\, art\, and crypto. It featured ALLOY\, a pioneering computer-generated book which described a cybernetic reality and meta-narrative where generative writing autonomously writes itself into existence. Also showcased was a wall of so-called Diamond Junk Reports\, a series of image+text pairs that asked the viewer to contemplate meaning-making in an era when artistic content can be easily and rapidly generated by computers and inserted into a deluge of digital ephemera. This foresaw the speculative and occasionally dubious world of web3 nearly two decades in advance. \nThis 2024 revisitation continues the conversation about authenticity\, but with tools benefiting from 20 years of development. dATAPLOT presents another series of image+text pairs from a museum exhibition about a latent civilization discovered by artists and archivists. Each museum relic under glass is carefully represented as tokenized digital art files and cryptographically bound to a unique keypair also included as hardcopies encased in envelopes meant for the gallery wall. The exhibit invites users to not only participate with but also embody and possess artifacts from this shared hallucination and artificial aesthetic. \nThe goal of this art practice is to develop techniques for creating plain text hypermedia objects as contemporary cultural relics\, aspiring to a level of significance and permanence comparable to that of ancient materiality. Perhaps this is one step towards the convergence of art object and document. Emerging from an exploration of latent spaces\, these digital creations exemplify a modern approach to preserving and reimagining a shared cultural heritage. The dATAPLOT project maps and articulates some of these aesthetic boundaries within the essence of humanistic inquiry\, reflecting the evolving narratives of our collective history. \nA technical aim of dATAPLOT is to produce a stable digital method for intermedia arts. Each artifact comprises a digital component and a physical counterpart which serves as the artifact’s proof-of-work. The digital component is a self-contained HTML document\, including the base64 encoded image. The content is structured within defined semantic tags which are then SHA256 hashed\, acting as an address in a type of distributed network. Additionally\, a JSON web token embedded in the document’s metadata includes the unique identifier and ownership claims\, ensuring each piece’s verifiability and distinct identity in a bespoke network of durable\, conceptual museum objects. \nMatthew Butler is a Research Manager at the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio in the University of Iowa Libraries where he works on such projects as the the Fluxus Digital Archives\, Intermedia Research Initiative\, and the International Dada Archive. He is an MFA graduate and former Bodine Fellow in the Intermedia Program in the School of Art & Art History at Iowa where he studied with Hans Breder. With over 25 years of professional experience in libraries and archives\, Matthew has developed a studio practice concentrating on an information systems approach to intermedia art. In addition to his role as research manager\, he also teaches university courses in digital art and humanities\, where he emphasizes not only creative practice but archival standards in student work.
